How to Speed Up My Computer

Waiting for a slow, creaking, computer to churn through a simple task is one of life's biggest annoyances. Instead of throwing it out the window, try some of these tips to fix a slow PC.

Uninstall unused programs
When you buy a new PC, there are a load of programs pre-installed on it. Also, PCs can simply accumulate programs over time. Most of these programs you'll never use, and some of them run in the background without you knowing, slowing down your computer in the process. So, uninstall unused programs.

Delete temporary files
Whenever you use the internet the browsing history remains in the depths of your PC. The same thing happens when you install something. It's like never throwing away the packaging when you buy a new TV, although doing so will free up space on your system. To get rid of this clutter, delete the temporary files.

Get additional RAM
Does your computer slow down when you have several applications open at once? This is using RAM, the memory your PC uses to run programs, and can be easily upgraded. See if your computer’s RAM is maxed out.  If not, adding additional RAM will help.

Run a disk defragment
Don't be scared by the description. This is essentially a way to optimize your hard drive's efficiency.
Run a disk clean-up.  Cleaning up your system will also speed things up.

Buy a new PC
This is drastic, but if none of these steps helps, and taking it in for service does not help, try a new computer.  The newer ones are faster and can cut your work time, not to mention your stress level, considerably.

Trouble Shooting the Speed of My Computer

Your computer can run slowly for many reasons. You need to troubleshoot some of the common causes.
  • Remove Excess Toolbars. If you've installed a lot of toolbars for your browser, these can significantly slow down your connection. Removing these toolbars can help speed up your browser, and can also help protect your private information.
  • Change Browsers. If your old browser is cluttered with hard-to-remove toolbars and everything just seems to be running really slowly, you may want to consider switching to a new browser. Microsoft Edge, Chrome, and Opera are all considered significantly faster than Internet Explorer and Firefox.
  • Clean up your hard disk. A poorly-optimized hard disk can drag down your computer's speed, affecting everything you do, including browsing the web. Keeping your hard drive optimized only takes a few minutes and can significantly improve your browsing experience.
  • Make sure that your disk is regularly defragmented. Most modern versions of Windows automate this for you.
  • Run Disk Cleanup to flush out temporary files which could be slowing down your browser.
  • Try to keep at least 15% of your hard disk free. If your hard drive gets too full, programs will take longer to load and make changes, which can drastically slow down your browser.
  • Check what programs are hogging your bandwidth. Often your connection speed is slow because other programs are using it.

These are great tips that can help you keep your computer running smoothly.

How Do I Protect My Computer From A Virus

Run virus scans at least once a week.

Viruses can greatly reduce your connection speed, as well as put your information and identity at risk. Keeping your computer virus-free will go a long way towards speeding up your connection.
  • You should always have an antivirus program installed and active, especially if you are using the internet. Antivirus programs can be installed for free. You should only have one antivirus program installed at a time (otherwise they would conflict with each other).
Protecting your computer can keep it running efficiently for you.
